Britain's Queen Elizabeth II celebrated the Platinum Jubilee to mark her 70 years on the British throne in June. So did many members of the public in the country. However, in September, Britains' longest reigning monarch died at the age of 96. Mourners not only gathered in front of Buckingham Palace and the castles but queued and walked towards the Palace of Westminster for the lying-in-state just like pilgrims. An electric board informing of a minimum waiting time at the start of the queue was indicating 14 hours for the modern 'pilgrimage.' On the day of the state funeral, constant flows of people who were forwarded from the procession route towards Hyde Park where screens had been set up, and a silence observer in Piccadilly Circus, appeared to be signifying how they were taking the end of the era.
